Komie’s – Afterflow

Did you ever wish you could get into Joe Satriani but all those notes? Where then check out multi Emmy award winner Komie, as he has come out with a debut album which is a fun guitar driven instrumental romp.

If you like Satriani technical brilliance then this possibly could be too bland for you. If you like great melodies with interesting time signatures then this would be for you.

I really enjoyed this album there is some entertaining passages here.

Check out one of the two songs below. I think you will like it.

Mark’s Quick Review: Artyfiction’s – Preliminaries

Artyfiction’s – Preliminaries

This is a debut album from Poland and its is quite good in spots. Short answer is this is a moderate recommendation for the album. There are some wonderful moments on this album and some other parts that I didn’t really like at all.

They actually have very few facebook likes so this band is really undiscovered and after one album already deserves a fate better than this obscurity they are in at the moment.

The instrumental track Moment of Revelation has a really nice build and you can request it easily below.

I look forward to their next album where maybe I will feel their songwriting ability to be more consistent.

Kingcrow’s – The Persistance

Album 7 from Italy’s Kingcrow has is as good as any album they have ever come out with. This album is full of crunchy guitars and Melodic tones. The perfect complement for my ears.

Diego Marchesi on vocals is the perfect complement to the music, much like Mariusz Duda of Riverside is to their music.

This album is for fans of their previous albums Riverside and Steven Wilson.

I have a few tracks for you to consider checking out below.

Mark’s Quick Review: Visionoir’s – The Waving Flame of Oblivion

Mark’s Quick Review: Visionoir’s – The Waving Flame of Oblivion

Visionoir’s – The Waving Flame of Oblivion

There is a lot to like here for fans of slightly heavier progressive rock. I sometimes forget how heavy an album this is thanks to the large polyphonic sound. The Waving Flame of Oblivion is full of interesting changes and heavy rock riffs samples of old television, and backing vocals. I find this amazing as Visionoir is a one-man project and debut.

This Italian band lists its main influences as Morricone, Black Sabbath, Goblin, King Crimson, and Ozric tentacles. I, personally, hear some Cosmograph and Ayreon.

At the time I am writing this there is only one purchase on Bandcamp. I strongly suggest you take a listen and double their “supported by” area.

The Slyde’s – Awakening

Holy Coheed and Cambria Batman. If I didn’t know better I would have thought this was a C&C album. Nathan Da Silva’s vocals and the music sounds very reminiscent of C&C, a very good C&C album. This for me has great syncopation, great riffs, and some drama. These Canadians can rock and I look forward to the time where maybe I could see them at Terra Incognita.

Their site says it perfectly “… fans of Rush, Dream Theater, Haken, Coheed and Cambria, and Megadeth”
I have two of their songs below for you to queue up.

Mark’s Quick Review: Laura Meade’s – Remedium

Mark’s Quick Review: Laura Meade’s – Remedium

Laura Meade’s – Remedium

Another wonderful singer and person is on tap for today’s review. Laura Meade, also know for her work in IZZ, has put out a solo album. Our first meeting was at ProgWest 2002 and we have seen her perform with IZZ a few times. We always had a great time during the show and enjoyed meeting her and the rest of the band afterwards.

Remedium as you would expect, features Laura prominently. There is also a lot to like for bass players on this album. I can’t, however, recommend this album.

This might be a personal bias of mine, but I really struggle with albums that are solo female artists whether it’s pop or prog. Unfortunately, Remedium didn’t change my bias as I am not hearing any drama or compelling reason to listen to this album over another. I will say I may be in the minority as Remedium has been well received by others including Prog magazine and NJ Proghouse.

I think several tracks would make great passages in IZZ songs. If you do like solo female artists, for example some of Christina Booth’s solo work, then I would give this a try – otherwise take a pass.
