Mark’s Quick Review: Curious Grace & Black Rabbit’s – #WorldOnFire

A Chicago Sextet Curious Grace & Black Rabbit releases their debut album #WorldOnFire. They play a lot of venues that I frequent and I will go see them live sometime, but I can’t recommend this album. I just couldn’t find any melodies to hold on to. To me passages sounded dissonant when I don’t think they were meant to be. Ill look forward to their next album and hope I feel better about them second time around.

Mark’s Quick Review: Glass Hammer’s – Chronomonaut

Glass Hammer’s Chronomonaut the continuation of Chronometree story from 2001 out does its predecessor.
The songs are well crafted and diverse. This album is a welcome edition to the Glass Hammer cannon. Matthew Parmenter’s guest appearance on the Past is the Past is one of the ways this album stays fresh and diverse. Chris Herin (Discipline, Tiles) is also on the album, which came about thanks to the bands both performing and 2 Days Prog + 1 according to Matthew.

Not the first time two discipline members have been on an album the first was Phideaux’s Doomsday afternoon and that was our album of the year that year. This might not be the 2018 album of the year but I think if you like any other Glass Hammer albums you will certainly like this one.

Mark’s Quick Review: Isla Fortune’s – Verity

This is a straight up rock album with some nice atmospheric additions long passages and interesting changes. The three piece band from Cyprus who puts out a hard hitting sound. I would suspect is a band you need to see live. Their energy is undeniable even in the studio. There is something about it keeping me from really liking this album. Maybe the vocals are to high in the mix. I can’t see to put my finger on why but it sounds like all the instruments are on one track and the vocals were recorded somewhere else. I really find my self getting into the instrumental passages then being taken out of the moment by the vocals. I look forward to the next album as I think the song writing is wonderful.

Full disclosure I have been a fan of Steve Katsikas work for 15 years thanks to his work with Little Atlas.
and Strattman and I was lucky enough to hear this band live in Chicago. I can say with some certainty that if you are a fan of neo prog you will like this album.
The cover of Steven Wilson’s Please Come Home is my favorite track which I guess tells me that their work isn’t quite up to the standards of Steven Wilson. That being said that cover was so good that I decided to relisten to the original version of that song.

This is the follow up to their debut in 2013, Solipsistic which I particularly liked. This album has a few guests on it most notably keyboard player Derek Sherinian, but Alex and Houry’s additions should not be over looked. The album is constantly entertaining with wonderful interludes of drama.

This album is in the sub category of Prog Metal but I find it more melodic than metal. The song writing is more diverse than some guitar led instrumental music and I appreciate that in this album.

This is a particularly good album for those of you that like a more melodic version of a Steve Via or Liquid Tension Experiment.

This one year old debut album from Italian duo Ivan Santovito and Ilenia Salvemini is full of prog goodness. Had I heard this album last year It would have received attention for best debut album. This duo along with others Giovanni Pastorino – Keyboards & programming, Simone Amodeo – Guitars, Andrea Bottaro – Bass guitar,
Paolo Tixi – Drums create a wonderful polyphonic sound. This album was a real pleasure to sit down and listen to. I particularly like the vocals and Giovanni Pastorino roll in making their sound what it is which is sounds a bit like an Italian version of IQ with a dash of Porcupine Tree.
