Mark’s Quick Review: Dream Theater’s – Distance Over Time

Mark’s Quick Review: Dream Theater’s – Distance Over Time

Well. For me the Astonishing was astonishingly bad. It is, to this day, only concert I ever walked out of. I feel sad about that. Because here is a band trying to do something different and that should be applauded. Instead, it was met with disdain from me.  Unfortunately I just didn’t like it, as much as I tried to. The band was aware that other fans were feeling as I did, and in an attempt to win some of those fans back the returned to a fan friendly album in Distance Over Time.

They did succeed to win me over in this endeavor.  This is my favorite album since Octivarium. If there was any criticism it would be that its a bit safe and there no 5 star moments on this album for me, at least not yet.

I come to expect 5 star songs from this band as I believe they have a dozen or so that I feel that strongly about.

Long story short check out this album I wouldn’t be surprised if you liked it even more than I did.  When I look at other peoples reviews everyone seems to have a different favorite song so that is a very good sign.

Mark’s Quick Review: Astrolabe’s – The Hermit, The Fool And The Hanged Man

Not sure what to say about this album.  It is certainly not for me.  I would have hazarded a guess its not really for many people but Marco Minnemann must like it as he is on the album. They actual playing is top notch but I don’t hear anything but a cacophony.  If you are looking for more experimental RIO type of prog or are a Marco Minnemann fan give it a listen.  However if you check my last.fm ratings and we have similar likes take a pass

Mark’s Quick Review: 25 Yard Screamer’s – Keep Sending Signals

The album with consists of a few bright moments but not enough for me to recommend the album.  The recording seems muted and flat.  Its all vocals and symbols.  This album has some songs from their first CD they ever came up with and I can’t help feel like they did not re record those songs since 2010.  Th

Mark’s Quick Review: Karikus’ – The Fold

Mark’s Quick Review: Karikus’ – The Fold

This is a band I probably should have heard of before this their fifth album.  They have played Crescendo and Night of the Prog.

This concept album  based on a cinematic narrative approach which is really right where I like my music to be.  My favorite album of 2017, Ostura would describe themselves in this way also.

This album is full of drama and I think the song writing is above average. Not surprised that they landed a few festivals.

Not sure what they need to do to get to that “next level” with me.  Maybe it would just be a better mix.  I find their live at Crescendo sound to be better than the studio album.

Mark’s Quick Review: RPWL’s – Tales From Outer Space

Mark’s Quick Review: RPWL’s – Tales From Outer Space

RPWL is one of my favorite bands, period.  I have seen them perform in three different countries, so I was super excited to get this album two months early.  The band rarely disappoints.

The album starts out with a great opening track called A New World which has ‘crunchy’ guitar riffs in it.

Track two, Welcome to the Freak Show , has some wonderful surreal lyrics and another nice melody which accentuates the images of crooked doorways in a dream state and a flute sample that makes you think of alien presence.  You instantly know that eerie whistle you have heard in sci-fi episodes – every thing from Brady Bunch to your favorite alien sci-fi movie.

The third track, Light of The World, is the longest and, as per usua,l the longest song is my favorite.

Not Our Place to Be, has some drama thanks to the staccato violin patch.

The final song Far Away From Here, exudes the feeling of a ‘final track’. The haunting keyboard chords and the slow melody sets us up for the end of the story and the long trip ahead for the main character.

Mark’s Quick Review: Nauticus’ – Disappear in Blue.

Mark’s Quick Review: Nauticus’ – Disappear in Blue.

Check this out this album is like mellow doom metal. This band from Turcu.  So in that way I love that this band really has defined their own sound.  That sound really is not something I am falling in love with at this point. They maybe were trying to get a sound that matches their live performances but what they ended up with something that seems muddy and under produced.
I think I will like to keep an eye on this band as their albums do seem to get progressively better.  Still, I cannot recommend this album at this time. I did pick a particularly good song for the Album Highlight queue it up and give it a listen
