Kino release first single “The Dead Club” from upcoming album

Last week, Kino announced the release of their new album ‘Radio Voltaire’, arriving 13 years after the band’s much-loved debut ‘Picture’ back in 2005. Out on March 23rd, 2018, it sees John Mitchell (It Bites, Lonely Robot) & Pete Trewavas (Marillion) teaming up once more, with Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson) on drums & John Beck (It Bites) guesting on keyboards.

Now they are pleased to reveal ‘The Dead Club’, the first track to be taken from the album, and you can listen to it now here:

John Mitchell comments: “Ladies and gentlemen!…Welcome to the Dead Club! Here is where all the wannabe rock stars hang out. It’s a place where petulant arrested development is encouraged, and to overdose makes you an iconic martyr in a rather timeless clichéd fashion. Beware false idols and remember at all times…..it’s only music….it’s light entertainment, nothing deserving of too much merit, much less a medal ☺”

The album will be available on Limited CD Digipak (including bonus tracks), Gatefold 180g Double Vinyl (incl. CD) & Digital Download. Digital pre-orders on iTunes and Amazon receive ‘The Dead Club’ immediately. Pre-order now here: https://kinomusic.lnk.to/RadioVoltaire

Here is another Chicago band I am excited to share with you. Their second album Re:Psychle is a diverse sounding band. Sometimes silly sometimes serious, sometimes funky, sometimes jazzy, always interesting.

They don’t particularly line up with my tastes on last.fm so if you are inclined like me to listen to the pink floyd side of prog and less the Gentle Giant side you might want to take a pass.

For fans of Gentle Giant and Caravan or other Canterbury prog you should certainly give this local band a spin.

This has special guest contributions from Grammy-winning musicians Nick Photinos (cello) and Michael Maccaferri (clarinets) of Eighth Blackbird, was mixed by Grammy-nominated producer Rick Barnes.

These ratings are a little low but that is more based on my own personal likes and is not a reflection of poor work.

Hear Steve Hackett’s rerecording of the GTR classic “When the Heart Rules the Mind”

Hear Steve Hackett’s rerecording of the GTR classic “When the Heart Rules the Mind”

This weekend sees the beginning of Steve Hackett’s North American tour, beginning with Cruise To The Edge on the 3rd February. To celebrate, Steve has rerecorded GTR’s US hit single ‘When The Heart Rules The Mind’, and you can listen to the new track below.

“I always loved the track ‘When the Heart Rules the Mind’. I think it is the strongest thing Steve Howe and I wrote together and I always wanted to do a version where I would sing it myself with the use of today’s production techniques. I’m also very pleased to have my friend Steve Rothery on board doing additional guitar.
I’m looking forward to taking my band on tour. It’ll be great to play both North and South America again celebrating Genesis, solo and GTR!”
Steve Hackett

‘When The Heart Rules The Mind’ will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon & all other digital services February 2nd.

A full list of Steve’s upcoming tour dates can be found here, including 5 special UK shows set to take place in October alongside a 41-piece orchestra: http://www.hackettsongs.com/tour.html

Devin Townsend announces hiatus from DTP

Devin Townsend announces hiatus from DTP

Earlier today, on Facebook, Devin Townsend announced that he was stepping down from his hugely successful Devin Townsend Project to pursue other musical ventures. In the statement he mentions 4 new albums he is working on and later goes on to vouch for his band and crew, even providing their contact info so they can be reached for other proejcts. You can read the full statement below:

“Hey guys, Devin here.

So after 8 years of touring with DTP, I’ve decided to take a break from this band and focus on a number of other projects I’ve been really wanting to do for some time now. The band have been there with me through thick and thin and we’ve shared some pretty great moments – I can’t say enough good things about them – And in the future, I’m sure we’ll work again.

I have 4 new albums I am currently working on. I am currently in the finishing stages one of the grandest and most overwhelming projects that I have been fortunate to do. It’s certainly my favourite DVD release of them all and is a powerful moment, if I can say so myself. Ocean Machine Live In Plovdiv (tentative name) Mixing the orchestras, choirs, the ‘by-request’ set and the full Ocean Machine album in that magnificent setting has been hugely rewarding. Seeing this spectacle come to life is a testament to this period of work and I can’t wait for you to see and hear it.

Life is short and I have a lot I need to say in some new and different avenues. I will certainly continue to play live in several new ways (starting next year) and I’m excited about some collaborative things that have also come up as well.

I salute the band, the team, and the audience for allowing us to do what we have done and the patience to accommodate my persistent morphing. As someone who’s music is connected to his personal growth, I feel an obligation to follow this muse wherever it leads. To not do so would be in direct opposition to what it is I have fundamentally done for all these years.

Peace and respect,
Devin Townsend”

This fusion-rock-electro-jazz band showed up a few weeks back and I just gave it a spin for the first and second time.

This is very “jazzy” for my taste but there is enough rock in there so you don’t have to be a jazz musician to enjoy listening to it.

This project focuses on creating parallels between colors and musical modes (musical colors) but it is also an excuse to create a personal story.

So while this album is not in my sweet spot of prog I did enjoy it.
