Mark’s Quick Review: Semantic Saturation’s – Paradigms

Mark’s Quick Review: Semantic Saturation’s – Paradigms

This is the follow up to their debut in 2013, Solipsistic which I particularly liked. This album has a few guests on it most notably keyboard player Derek Sherinian, but Alex and Houry’s additions should not be over looked. The album is constantly entertaining with wonderful interludes of drama.

This album is in the sub category of Prog Metal but I find it more melodic than metal. The song writing is more diverse than some guitar led instrumental music and I appreciate that in this album.

This is a particularly good album for those of you that like a more melodic version of a Steve Via or Liquid Tension Experiment.

Mark’s Quick Review: Isproject’s – The Archinauts

Mark’s Quick Review: Isproject’s – The Archinauts

This one year old debut album from Italian duo Ivan Santovito and Ilenia Salvemini is full of prog goodness. Had I heard this album last year It would have received attention for best debut album. This duo along with others Giovanni Pastorino – Keyboards & programming, Simone Amodeo – Guitars, Andrea Bottaro – Bass guitar,
Paolo Tixi – Drums create a wonderful polyphonic sound. This album was a real pleasure to sit down and listen to. I particularly like the vocals and Giovanni Pastorino roll in making their sound what it is which is sounds a bit like an Italian version of IQ with a dash of Porcupine Tree. Request a track and take a listen.

Mark’s Quick Review: Oscillazioni Alchemico Kreative’s – Giordano Bruno

Mark’s Quick Review: Oscillazioni Alchemico Kreative’s – Giordano Bruno

Multi-Instrumentalist Jerry Cutillo surrounded himself with a great band and gursts for a concept album about the first scientific martyr Giordano Bruno. This band which has been putting out albums since 1993 has really put together a solid album. Despite making and Italian Prog Album my album of the year I am not usually drawn to the Italian prog scene like my counterparts are. Possibly my tastes are changing because I hear greatness in this album at times. This album exudes the Italian prog sounds and would be well liked by PFM fans and other fans of the Italian sub genre of prog. I think there is a lot to love here too for fans of Zappa and Tull. Listen to for Caravan’s Richard Sinclair and David Jackson from PFM and Peter Hammill. Check out Circe by requesting it below.

Mark’s Quick Review: Elizabeth the last’s – Elizabeth the last

Mark’s Quick Review: Elizabeth the last’s – Elizabeth the last

As you may have noticed I am not always to keen on instrumentals, but this one caught my ear right away. There is drama immediately from the first measures of the first measures of Centralia. There are many layers to these songs which is performed primarily with André Krispin on Guitar, Benjamin Oppermann on Bass, and
Arnd Finke on Drums, Percussion, Piano, Synthesizer.

Each song is unique and interesting and has some drama. On first listens I think the beginning of the album is stronger than the back portion of the album but all songs are solid.

The New Feature track has haunting tenor sax straight out of the Bojack Horseman opening written by Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney.

I would suggest this to any fans of melodic instrumental progressive rock.

Mark’s Quick Review: Alizarin’s – Cast Zenith

Mark’s Quick Review: Alizarin’s – Cast Zenith

Alizarin a west coast, 3 piece, guitar centric, instrumental band sent us their disk.

This is typically not my thing and in some ways this album is not really made for me. I still liked it though there are great melodies here and not as much guitar virtuousness as sometimes comes with these albums.

The problem with this album and others like it for me. Is with no keyboard you are not able to hand-off the lead in a song to another instrument and the album therefor can sound like one long song, as songs can lose their identity with a three piece composed as this one is.

If you like instrumental albums that have good melodies I would check this out.
